Country Spotlight: Kyrgyz Republic

Kyrgyz Republic is a lower-middle-income country in Central Asia. Associational life and voluntary professional organisations have a longstanding heritage in Kyrgyz Republic, however since the fall of the Soviet Union, social development organisations have emerged as dominant non-governmental actors. Civil society organisations across the country generally lack adequate funding streams and important competencies, and their varied roles are often misunderstood by government.

Civil Society NET partner Aga Khan Foundation has been active in the Kyrgyz Republic since 2002, supporting rural development, health and education projects implemented through the Mountain Societies Development Support Programme.
