Country Spotlight: Tajikistan

Tajikistan is a lower-middle-income country in Central Asia. Associational life and voluntary professional organisations have a longstanding heritage in Tajikistan, however since the fall of the Soviet Union, social development organisations have emerged as dominant non-governmental actors. Civil society organisations across the country generally lack adequate funding streams and important competencies, and their varied roles are often misunderstood by government.

Civil Society NET partner Aga Khan Foundation has been active in Tajikistan since 1993, implementing through the Mountain Societies Development Support Programme innovative, inclusive, community-based development approaches in which local organisations identify, prioritise and implement projects.
